Paterson Education Fund deplores the NJ Supreme Court decision to replace the Abbott remedies with the School Funding Reform Act [SFRA].
“Paterson children lost today, and for the foreseeable future,” said Irene Sterling, President of the Paterson Education Fund, as the NJ Supreme Court gutted the Abbott remedies in favor of the School Funding Reform Act [SFRA].
As a consequence:
• Paterson schools will be flat funded for the next two years.
• Further program cuts for support services and extended learning opportunities will be required to cover the costs of rising salaries and other fixed costs. Continue reading »

TRENTON — New Jersey’s Supreme Court today will rule on whether a new school funding formula proposed by Gov. Jon Corzine is constitutional, which could potentially end the long-running, and controversial, Abbott vs. Burke school funding case that has sent billions of dollars to the state’s poorest communities over the past three decades.
The state’s highest court in April heard arguments on the new funding formula approved last year by lawmakers at the behest of Corzine, which would replace decades of court oversight. In a series of decisions since the mid 1980’s, the court said the state’s poorest districts — the so-called Abbott districts, such as Newark, Paterson and Camden — must be funded on par with the state’s wealthiest. The new system distributes school aid based on enrollment, with a bonus for the number of students who are poor, handicapped or otherwise more expensive to serve. MORE>>

The flat income tax Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan is pushing as a key component of his campaign would provide huge tax cuts for the rich, but lower income residents would pay more — some twice as much.
Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, wants a 2.9 percent flat income tax to replace the state’s graduated system, which charges more for those who make the most and has rates ranging from 1.4 percent to 8.97 percent. MORE>>
